Preposition is a word or phrase that shows the relationship of a noun to another noun”

Preposition is a word or phrase that shows the relationship of a noun to another noun such as at, by, in, to, from, with. Sometimes, preposition comes before a noun. It is also usually comes before pronoun or noun phrase. A preposition joins the noun to some other part of the sentence. I will give you some examples:

On, in, by, with, under, through, at

Here are some special characteristics of Prepositions:

- Preposition is a part of speech in traditional grammar.
- Preposition is a structure word in modern grammar.
- Preposition is a small class of words.
- Preposition has no formal characteristic endings.
- Preposition is a word used to relate a noun or pronoun to some other part of the sentence (see the diagram).
- Preposition is signal syntactic structures that function as the other parts of speech (noun, adjective, and adverb).
- Range in meanings of Preposition: from definite semantic notions as time, place, etc. to purely structural meanings.
- signal that a noun or noun phrase or noun clause follows it.
- Preposition is a word that combines with a noun or pronoun to form a phrase

Preposition Phase has a function as noun, adjective, and adverb.

For examples:
  1. The model showed the diamond necklace to whoever might be a potential buyer.
  2. They were proud of having such a good score.
  3. Jack fell down the stairs.
  4. Please come in the class.

Here are some functions of Prepositional Phrase:

A.      As a Prepositional object
Examples:
(1)   The father looked at his child happily.
(2)   This tool consists of metal and woods.
(3)   All the boys over there were laughing at the jokers.

B.      As an Object + Prepositional object
Examples:
(1)   Please remind me of (about) the time of the meeting.
(2)   I have consulted my lawyer about the will.

C.      As a Two Prepositional Objects
Examples:

(1)   He likes to joke with his wife about everything.
(2)   The patient complained about the food to the nurse.

D. As a Subject
Examples:

(1)   Over the fence is out.
(2)   From ten to two is a good time to find me in the office.

E.    As a Subject Complement, Object Complement, Object of Preposition
Examples:
(1)   She was in tears.
(2)   That case is out of our jurisdiction.
(3)   We found her in tears.
(4)   I cannot see you until after Ied al Fitr Day.
(5)   The dog emerged from under the porch.

F.      As a Adverbial function
Examples:

(1)   I can see you at noon. (modifying a verb)
(2)   Put the flowers in the vase. (modifying a verb)
(3)   The train is bound for Rome. (modifying an adjective)
