WHAT IS COMPARATIVES AND SUPERLATIVES?

Sentences with comparatives and superlatives sometimes appear in the English texts. It is important for you all to know these:
·         Forming the comparative and superlative sentences correctly.
·         Using the comparative and superlative correctly.
·         Using the irregular -er, -er structure.

Forming Comparatives and Superlatives Correctly
In the English test, especially TOEFL Test, there are sometimes comparative or superlative sentences that formed incorrectly. Therefore, you should be able to form the comparative and superlative to answer such questions correctly.


Comparative is formed with either -er or more and than.
 In the comparative, -er is used with short adjectives such as smart, and more is used with longer adjectives such as beautiful. Look at the example below:
·         Josh is smarter than Ron.
·         Barbara is more beautiful than Sharon.

Superlative is formed with the, either -est or most, and sometimes in, of, or a that clause.
In the superlative sentences, -est is used with short adjectives such as smart, and most is used with longer adjectives such as beautiful.
  • ·         Josh is the smartest man in the world.
  • ·         Barbara is the most beautiful in her village.
  • ·         The lion over there is the largest one that I have ever seen.
  • ·         The fastest runner wins the race, (no in, of, or that)
