Have you heard it? I think most of you have heard it. But, if you have never heard it, I guess you live in a cave in the strange island. Ha-ha. No, I’m just kidding. Okay, before we discuss further about Noun phrase, I will describe the meaning of the Noun Phrase first. Here it is:

“Noun phrase is a group of words without finite verb, which has a noun as a head word.”

Now, have you understand about the meaning of Noun phrase? I hope you have understood. As explained in the sentence above, a noun phrase is a group of words without finite verb, which has a noun as a head word. I mean, a group of words here means more than one words. I will give you some examples:

·           Cat                                                       White cat

Now, I will give you some examples of Noun Phrases on a sentence. The underlined words below are noun phrases.
1.      I buy two books.
2.      Rhys drives an expensive car to the school.
3.      Taylor makes sweet cookies.
4.      Three young women are talking about me.
5.      I have much money.
In English, sometimes there are words that come before a head word. This word is called Pre Modifier. There also words that comes after head word. This word is called Post Modifier. I will give you a formula for this pattern.

Pre Modifier – Head Word – Post Modifier

Look at the example below:

·         A book
A          : Pre Modifier
Book    : Head Word

·         A very good book on the table.
A very good     : Pre modifier
Book                : Head
On the table    : Post Modifier

Now, I will explain further about Pre Modifier:

  1. 1.      Pre modifier

There are some components that can be pre modifier. They are:
·         Determiner
All, the, a, this, that, these, those, some, any, many, much, a lot of, little, a little, few, a few, several, each, my, your, his, her, our, their, and many more.
Example: A book. All students. Your home.

·         Number
One, two, three, four, five, ... First, second, third, fourth, fifth, … etc.
Example: One day, Two heart, Second son, Third people.

·         Present Participle (V ing)
Includes verb that have –ing form.
Example: Waiting room, smoking area, running track, racing components.

·         Adjective
Including adjective phrase like very handsome, extremely hard, fairly good.
Example: Good car, nice blog.

·         Past participle
Including adverb + past participle like badly damaged, well written, seriously injured.
Example: a written test, well score, a badly damaged phone.

·         Noun
All noun word like book, family, etc.
Example: Book cover, family life, etc.

2.      Post Modifier

·         Single words
Such as the boy here, the man outside, the boy there, etc

·         Prepositional Phrase
The meaning of prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with preposition. The prepositional phrase can be Preposition + Noun or Preposition + Noun Phrase.
The formula is:

Prepositional Phrase = prepositional + noun / noun phrase

These words are called prepositions:
In, on, at, for, from, to, under, above, by, with, without, near, after, before, beside, of.

These words are called prepositional phrases:
At home, in my home, in the school, with me, from Bandung, with love
